Learn About Condensation and Humidity

Condensation is a result of interior humidity and the difference between the indoor and outdoor air temperature. If the humidity in your home is low, then the chances of experiencing condensation will also be low. However, how efficient your windows are will make a difference in the temperature and humidity level at which condensation occurs. Windows that are energy-efficient will help to reduce condensation.

Tips For Controlling Condensation Problems

Once winter arrives and we turn on our heat, condensation begins and continues until spring. It’s usually just a case of too much moisture in your home and not the fault of your windows and doors. Here are some tips that will help you reduce the problem.
  1. Run the wall fan while cooking and washing dishes and keep it on the entire time.
  2. Keep the door closed while showering or taking a bath. If your bathroom has a ceiling fan, keep it running while you’re in the shower and keep it running for at least five minutes after you’re finished. Leave your bathroom window slightly open if you don’t have a ceiling fan.
  3. Open a window or two and air your home out daily.
  4. Humidifiers will add moisture to your home so don’t use them if you have a condensation problem. Use a dehumidifier instead to control moisture in the air.
  5. Make sure your clothes dryer is properly vented to the outside of your home.
  6. Remove the screens in your casements or awnings in the winter if they have them.
  7. Keep your drapes or blinds open on extremely cold nights.
  8. Keep the air in your home circulating by running ceiling fans.
  9. Newer homes may have air exchange systems that will control the humidity level.
